Xara Web Designer

- Web Design for the Rest of Us?

The software makers Xara who brought us Xtreme 4 and 3D Graphics have unveiled a new Web Design product. It promises to be all new, WYSIWYG, drag & drop, no html coding skills required. When I went to their website,

http://www.xara.com/us/products/webdesigner/

their home page has 200 code validation errors and it falls apart when text size is increased in browser. Incredibly, if they can't get their home page to work right, what does that say about their product?

I explored their site a little more and I found this page which is their "Outsider Newsletter."

http://site.xara.com/outsider/

There appears to be some good information here but holy mother of Moses! A whopping 1300+ validation errors on a single page! I didn't think it possible, but here it is - as checked by W3.org on-line code validation system.

http://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1&uri=http%3A%2F%2Fsite.xara.com%2Foutsider%2F

It can't get much worse than that or can it? We'll have to wait and see. I'm downloading the trial version of Xara's Web Designer right now... Hopefully their Web Designer software is able to produce better code than their web designer person.

Hi Nancy
When I checked out this very page using the validator it came up with 319 errors and 59 warnings! In contrast I've checked pages I've made using Xara's new Web Designer software and it checks out perfect - zero errors - with the validator. It seems the Xara pages you tested weren't actually created with the new software.

LOL - `nuff said!

it's always good to test...perhaps another test would be to compare the graphical output of Xara Web Designer with Net Objects Fusion?

It's obvious that the NOF folks are threatened by XWD and with good reason - it works really well AND they have a demo of the product that you can try before you buy, unlike Net Objects Fusion --- which will only let you demo older versions...which are horrible by the way. There was also a large user base for NOF in the Xara community, but not anymore.

So let's test away!

Our HTML IS simpler than that from almost all other web authoring software.

Ross,
Sadly Blogger sites do not pass validation. Google uses proprietary tags in it's hidden code, so there's little I or anyone but Google can do to change this unfortunate situation.

If you go to my actual website at Alt-Web.com you will find standards compliant web pages.

Anonymous,
Ironic that you should mention NetObjects Fusion. The last time I visited their home page it passed validation with flying green colors.

Hi Nancy,

It's a dangerous business commenting code validation errors, as it's an open invitation for others to check your sites out.

You might want to fix the 169 errors on the links page of your own website (http://alt-web.com/LINKS_MNGR/links.php).

Paul

Paul,
Thanks for pointing that out. I did remove the copious code from the link exchange submissions. But this isn't about me or my site. It's about a Web Design software (any maker) having a poorly built web site. If the company doesn't care enough to ensure their site performs well for all people - regardless of text size, browser settings, etc.. then they probably don't care much about their customers. At least that's the message it sends to me and my web developer colleagues.
