Submit Sitemaps to 4 Major Search Engines

When you upload your new site to a server, you probably won't see an increase in traffic to your site for several weeks. This waiting period while the search engines get around to indexing your site pages can seem like an eternity. To help kick start this process a little, here are some simple guidelines for telling 4 major search engines that you exist.

I. Create your Sitemaps -

  1. Go to http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/ to generate your xml and ror site maps. Note: www.domain.com is not the same as domain.com. Use the address that matches your Google account. It goes without saying that you must change 'example.com' in the following link examples to your actual domain name.

  2. Download your newly created sitemaps to your hard drive and then use an FTP client to upload them to your website's root folder (where your index page is located). If you wish to modify your sitemaps, use a plain text editor such as NotePad or NoteTab.
II. Submit Sitemap to Google -
  1. Go to Google Webmaster Tools www.Google.com/webmasters/tools/

  2. Log-in with your Google name and password (same as your Google email if you have one).

  3. Submit the url that matches your account:
    • http://example.com/sitemap.xml or
    • http://www.example.com/sitemap.xml
Submissions are usually verified within a few hours although indexing may take 1-4 weeks.

III. Submit Sitemap to Yahoo -
  1. Go to https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/submit

  2. Log in with your Yahoo name and password (same as your Yahoo email if you have one).

  3. Once you log in, you’ll see two choices:
    • Submit a Website or a Webpage – skip this.
    • Submit a Site Feed – this is what you want.

  4. Submit the url:
IV. Submit Sitemap to MSN -
In your browser, paste the following url into the address bar and hit enter:
Indexing will usually occur in 2-3 weeks.

V. Submit Sitemap to ASK -
In your browser, paste the following url into the address bar and hit enter:
That's all there is to it. Now sit back and wait patiently for the spiders to crawl your site pages.

Ok, but how do you "upload them to your website's root folder " using NOF 9 and have no clue as to how do this!

Use a dedicated FTP app.

- Cute FTP
- Filezilla (free)
- WS_FTP Pro

FTP looks much like Windows Explorer except you will see your remote server's folders on the right panel and your local computer folders on the left.

Most Web design software comes with a built-in ftp client but I almost never use them. IMHO a dedicated FTP client is a small investment and much better choice for managing files & folders on your server.
